Conversation on Recidivism and Ex-Offender Re-entry held at UNF

The second of Mayor Lenny Curry’s Community Conversations on public safety was held at the University of North Florida Monday, Feb. 29. With the topic “Our Citizens: Reducing Recidivism and Re-entry to Improve Communities,” panelists discussed issues affecting incarcerated citizens as they try to re-enter society.

The 2016 SEC Women's Basketball Tournament is in Town this Week

For the first time in its 37 year history, the Southeastern Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament will be held in Jacksonville this week, with play beginning Wednesday, March 2 at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena. During a news conference Monday morning, the Jacksonville Sports Council’s Executive Director Alan Verlander, joined by Mayor Lenny Curry and JAXSPORTS Board Chairman Carl Cannon, shared logistical information and activities surrounding the weeklong event.

City Improves Its Sales Tax Revenue Bond Rating

Standard and Poor’s Rating Services has upgraded the rating on the City of Jacksonville’s sales tax revenue bonds to an “A+.” Up from an “A” the City earned the previous year, bond ratings are an indicator of credit quality and strength of the underlying revenue stream. An improved rating leads to lower borrowing costs for the City on future debt issues.

Macquarie Expansion to Create 120 Jobs in Jacksonville

Governor Rick Scott and Mayor Lenny Curry joined Macquarie Group to celebrate the opening of their global financial services center in Jacksonville that will create more than 120 new jobs over the next two years. The company chose Florida to locate their global financial services center over nearly 20 other locations in the US and around the world. Macquarie first announced its expansion in Florida in July 2015 and has already added 65 employees.

The City's Mosquito Control Division is working with the DOH and other agencies to reduce the spread of mosquito borne diseases.

Mayor and Sheriff shoot hoops to benefit youth

Mayor Lenny Curry faced off against Sheriff Mike Williams on Saturday, Feb. 13, in a charity basketball game to benefit the Police Athletic League of Jacksonville (PAL) and their programs for Jacksonville youth. Team Mayor brought home the win, and the coveted gold basketball trophy, with a score of 78 to 69.

Mayor focuses on public safety, block-by-block

Mayor Lenny Curry joined District 8 City Councilwoman Katrina Brown and representatives from JEA and the City’s Public Works Department yesterday to tour a neighborhood in the 32209 ZIP code. The group walked the streets and talked with residents to identify street lighting needs, overgrown trees and shrubs, blight conditions, and other challenges that may foster criminal activity.

Keep Jacksonville Beautiful Accepting Nominations for Annual Awards

Keep Jacksonville Beautiful and the City of Jacksonville are accepting nominations for the 11th Annual Keep Jacksonville Beautiful Awards now through March 11. These awards showcase individuals, businesses, organizations and schools that are making strides to keep our city clean. The awards will be presented at the Keep Jacksonville Beautiful Friend Raiser taking place April 1 at City Hall (117 W. Duval St. - 32202).
 

Youth Violence to Lead Community Conversation on Public Safety

Mayor Lenny Curry will kick-off his latest series of Community Conversations addressing public safety in the upcoming weeks. The first of this series, "Our Future: Addressing Youth Violence in our Community", will feature panelists Sheriff Mike Williams (Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office), Superintendent Nikolai Vitti (Duval County Public Schools), State Attorney Angela Corey (Fourth Judicial Court) and Officer Deon Johnson (JSO Dept. of Corrections). W.C. Gentry, chair of the Jax Journey Board, will serve as moderator.
