Jacksonville Honors 61 Fallen Officers

May 05, 2016
Elected officials and dignitaries joined Sheriff Mike Williams, Undersheriff Pat Ivey and Fraternal Order of Police President Steve Zona in front of the Police Memorial Building on Bay Street with the members of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) and the family and friends of fallen officers for the annual Police Memorial Day Observance.

The ceremony honored the 61 Jacksonville law enforcement officers who have fallen in the line of duty since 1840, and included a final roll call reading, a 21 gun salute, flag folding ceremony, and a missing man flyover from JSO's aviation unit.

The agency’s annual “Tribute to Our Fallen Officers” service is a part of the national Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and National Police Week, recognized throughout the country in early May. During the observance, Mayor Lenny Curry proclaimed May 4, 2016 as "Police Memorial Day" in Jacksonville.
