National Observance Leads Mayor to Issue Proclamation to Promote Public Safety

Demonstrating his commitment to programs, services and offerings that improve public safety, Mayor Lenny Curry is presenting a proclamation identifying April 24 – 30 as National Re-entry Week, an observance established this year by the U.S. Department of Justice. In its inaugural year, the observance aims to bring awareness to the challenges ex-offenders face re-entering society after incarceration. Students and leaders from the City of Jacksonville’s D.A.W.N. program will receive the proclamation from Mayor Curry during a ceremony being held tomorrow at 3 p.m.
“There are many barriers and challenges that our most vulnerable citizens face,” said Mayor Curry. “I am committed to supporting efforts that reduce recidivism rates and create environments that improve the lives and communities of citizens seeking re-entry into society.”
The City of Jacksonville established the Richard A. McKissick Memorial D.A.W.N. program in 1998 to support adults incarcerated in Duval County facilities. Program participants receive GED and Adult Basic Education instruction, life skills training and transitional counseling. In addition, the City relaunched Jax Journey late last year, supporting programs that enhance crime prevention and intervention efforts for citizens including ex-offenders.
The ceremony, to include proclamation presentations for several additional organizations, will also include recognition of employees who have reached milestone years of service with the City of Jacksonville.
