Gov. Scott: Jacksonville Area Added Nearly 23,000 New Jobs Over the Year

Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that the Jacksonville area added 22,700 new private-sector jobs in the last year. Jacksonville’s unemployment rate was 3.8 percent in May, down 0.6 percentage point from one year ago. Statewide, Florida businesses created 21,900 new jobs in May and the unemployment rate dropped to 4.3 percent, the lowest rate since August 2007. Since December 2010, Florida businesses have created 1,377,100 new private-sector jobs.

As participants in the Mayor’s Summer Jobs Program, boys and girls, ages 16-21, will be provided an opportunity to explore career pathways in a variety of professional industries including education, business, medicine, government, sports and more. From shadowing nurses at Baptist Health, to serving as Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Explorers, youth will gain hands-on experience and information that will aid them in developing their career choices.

Jacksonville to Honor Fallen Heroes at Annual Memorial Day Cerermony

Loved ones, veterans, service members and citizens will join together Monday to honor our fallen heroes at the City of Jacksonville’s annual Memorial Day observance. This year, four new names have been added to the almost 1700 on Jacksonville’s Veterans Memorial Wall that stands in honor of the service and sacrifice of U.S. Service Members who died while on active duty. The four servicemen, including Christopher Colafati, Zachary Debeau, Micki Nixon and Wade Wilkenson, will be recognized in a ceremony to include their families and keynote speakers, Mayor Lenny Curry and ADM William F. Moran, Vice Chief of Naval Operations. Free parking is available in Lot J (enter from Gator Bowl Boulevard on the stadium side) and Lot P (enter from Duval Street). Patriotic attire is suggested.

Jacksonville’s unemployment rate was 3.8 percent in April, down 0.6 percentage point from one year ago. Statewide, Florida businesses created 15,000 new jobs in April and the unemployment rate dropped to 4.5 percent, the lowest since November 2007. Since December 2010, Florida businesses have created 1,355,700 new private-sector jobs.

Household Hazardous Waste and E-Waste Mobile Collection Event

With a focus on eliminating blight in our neighborhoods, the City of Jacksonville offers citizens opportunities and events that encourage appropriate disposal of waste and other debris throughout Jacksonville. One of these many efforts is through the Solid Waste Division, which is hosting a household hazardous waste (HHW) and electronic waste (e-waste) mobile collection event Saturday, May 20.
