The City of Jacksonville’s Developing Adults With Necessary Skills (DAWN) Program will host a graduation ceremony for thirteen young women and seven young men who have completed State Department of Education requirements to earn their high school diploma. These students, while serving jail sentences, received concentrated GED instruction coupled with transitional counseling and vocational training.

The City of Jacksonville’s Military Affairs, Veteran and Disabled Services (MAVDS) department will host free career and employment counseling seminars for veterans and active duty military within one year of transition, as part of the city’s commitment to assisting veterans in securing employment. The session will be provided by Incepture, Inc., a leading staffing and managed solutions company in Jacksonville and a member of the City of Jacksonville/Jacksonville Military Veterans Coalition (JMVC) “Jobs for Vets” initiative.

In keeping with its tradition of honoring Black History Month, Jacksonville Public Library will host the unveiling of the highly esteemed Black History Calendar. A new calendar is produced each year, with the artwork and contents kept confidential throughout the creative process until it is revealed to the community at the library event.

Animal Care and Protective Services (ACPS) will open its doors to the public in an after-hours event to support the new photography book “Better Together” produced by the Friends of Jacksonville Animals (FOJA). The group is one of the vital nonprofit agencies that provides crucial animal support and services, such as heartworm treatment for dogs, on behalf of ACPS.

Mayor Alvin Brown is pleased to announce the Jacksonville Light Parade will be held Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. The event will be held in partnership with private organizations and local supporters, similar to the 2011 event.

Keep Jacksonville Beautiful is partnering with the Sea to Shore Alliance, Keepers of the Coast and other organizations to host a beach cleanup at the 4th annual Right Whale Festival, a celebration for the critically endangered North Atlantic right whales' annual return to the Southeast coast of the United States. The warm waters off the coasts of Northeast Florida, Georgia and South Carolina are the only known right whale calving areas in the North Atlantic Ocean.
