Aspiring poets share spoken word at family-friendly event

Young people age 12 and older and adult poets are invited to perform original or published poetry at the Jacksonville Public Library’s 9th Annual Teen and Adult Poetry Jam. This non-competitive open mic event is hosted by Lydia Stewart of the Ritz Theatre and Museum.

All ages are welcome to this free poetry lovers’ program featuring family-friendly material.

The City of Jacksonville, Keep Jacksonville Beautiful and the Beaches Sea Turtle Patrol are coordinating the annual July 5 Beaches Cleanup following the Independence Day holiday.

YouthBuild and DAWN Summer Graduation

The City of Jacksonville’s YouthBuild and Developing Adults With Necessary Skills (DAWN) Programs will host a ceremony to celebrate the graduation of six young women and thirteen young men who have completed State Department of Education requirements to earn their high school diploma. These students, while serving jail sentences, received concentrated GED instruction coupled with transitional counseling and vocational training. In addition, twelve YouthBuild participants have also earned National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) construction certificates.

7th Annual Teen Battle of the Bands

The Jacksonville Public Library will host the 7th Annual Teen Battle of the Bands this Saturday. The event begins at 1 p.m. at the Main Library. This free, one-of-a-kind local contest gives teens the opportunity to perform their original work in front of hundreds of spectators, fans, family and friends. Six local bands of all musical genres face off for a chance to win studio recording time and gift certificates. All ages are welcome to attend.

On June 21, 2012, the Jacksonville Children’s Commission, its summer camp partners, and Jacksonville Education Commissioner Dr. Donnie Horner, will join communities across the country in the ninth annual celebration of Summer Learning Day. Summer Learning Day is a project driven by the National Summer Learning Association, which works to ensure that every child is safe, healthy, and engaged in learning during the summer. The event is designed to raise awareness about the importance of high-quality summer learning opportunities in the lives of young people, prevent learning loss over the summer and ultimately bring a close to the achievement gap.


"International Surf Day" Beach Cleanup

The City of Jacksonville’s Clean It Up, Green It Up office will partner with the First Coast Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation to observe “International Surf Day” with a cleanup and a paddle out on Wednesday, June 20.
