About Clanzel T. Brown Park

The City of Jacksonville purchased the property on April 26, 1977. The original name of the park was Golfair Park. The name was changed to Clanzel T. Brown Park on February 28, 1983. Mayor Jake Godbold and Councilwoman E. Denise Lee dedicated the park in honor of Brown on February 19, 1985. Brown’s passion was to improve the lives of Jacksonville’s Black citizens during the civil rights struggle of the 1960s and 1970s. A 20-year member of the NAACP, he was also active in the Urban League, serving as its director for 16 years. He was the first African-American to serve on the Downtown Development Authority and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Brown worked to integrate the City’s police and fire departments and died in1982.
