Councilwoman Mia L. Jones, joined the Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in their 52nd South Atlantic Regional Conference, held at the Hyatt (formerly known as the Adams Mark Hotel) for a Public Meeting. Councilwoman Jones was joined by various other dignitaries, city representatives and notable sorority members, including: Jacksonville resident and former National President Norma Soloman-White, State Senator (Miami) and past South Atlantic Regional Director, Frederica S. Wilson, Present South Atlantic Regional Director, Irene W. McCollom and others.
A thirteen year member of the organization, Councilwoman Jones commented, 'I believe that the organization's commitment to education, health and economic empowerment are key to strengthening the Black Community.'
The agenda included musical tributes by the Edward Waters College Choir; recognition of young authors from throughout the region who believed in their ability to express their ideas on paper and presentations of Community Service Awards to persons who have given of their time and talents throughout the community.
In 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded, making it America's first Greek–letter organization established by and for Black college women, who were committed to promoting high scholastic achievement and unity among their peers. The conference, held April 6th through April 10th, with over 2,700 members of the South Atlantic Region, coming form Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, converged on Jacksonville to celebrate the Awesome Spirit of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
