In-coming Council President Michael L. Corrigan, Jr. and Vice President Daniel J. Davis were installed as the 2006-2007 leaders of the Jacksonville City Council during the annual ceremonial passing of the gavel.

The ceremony was held June 29, 2006, in the Jacoby Symphony Hall at the Times-Union Center for the Performing Arts. The Honorable Donald R. Moran, Jr., Chief Judge of the Fourth Judicial Circuit Court of Florida, administered the Vice Presidential Oath of Office. United States District Judge, The Honorable Timothy J. Corrigan, cousin of President Corrigan, presided over the Presidential Oath of Office.

During his remarks, Corrigan spoke of 'The Talent Within'. Corrigan expressed it as, 'The talent within this City Council, this city government, our business community, the citizens of the City of Jacksonville and each and every person in this room tonight!' He urged the audience to reach inside and harness that talent and further challenged those present to, 'use the talent within you to make this community a better place to live.'

Corrigan shared with the audience the positive and lasting impact mentoring had made in his life and the lives of others. In announcing a goal to double the number of mentors that the Kessler Mentoring Connection certifies in our community, Corrigan encouraged those present to 'think about the mentors in your life. Where would you be without them? I urge you to share the gift of mentoring with someone else.'

During his year has Council President, Corrigan wants the City Council to tackle outstanding initiatives, proposing that we 'Finish What We Started.' As president, he will continue the important work begun by the City Council Special Committee on Conducting Jacksonville's Business. Corrigan also plans to work with the Mayor and the Finance Chair to curb the practice of using one-time revenues to pay for recurring expenses. Additionally, Corrigan looks forward to leading the charge to finalize a rewrite of the Zoning Code.
