10:00 a.m.
JFRD’s Sea of Blue Memorial March is Postponed Until Further Notice.
On Oct. 12 at 10 a.m., the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department will conduct its annual Fallen Firefighter Memorial March, also known as the “Sea of Blue.” Hundreds of off-duty firefighters in dress uniform will gather near the foot of South Hogan Street, adjacent to The Jacksonville Landing, to participate in this commemorative procession which honors local firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
Downtown workers, residents and visitors are encouraged to come outdoors and watch the Memorial March as it proceeds along its 1-mile route (details below). JFRD’s Pipes and Drums Band and Honor Guard will participate, and a limited number of fire apparatus will also travel along the route.
ROUTE/TRAFFIC CONTROL
Firefighters will step off at 10 a.m. from the foot of South Laura Street in Downtown Jacksonville and march north on Laura Street, passing Hemming Park and Jacksonville City Hall. The route then turns east onto Ashley Street until firefighters reach Liberty Street and Fire Station 1 (611 Liberty St.) for the annual Fallen Firefighter Ceremony, which begins at 11 a.m.
As the Fallen Firefighter Memorial March approaches and passes through each intersection, JSO will provide hold and release traffic control measures. The march will take approximately 45 minutes to complete.
