Residents throughout the city are invited to participate in the 2015 Florida Coastal Cleanup event The City of Jacksonville’s Keep Jacksonville Beautiful Commission. This annual event, which provides volunteers with an opportunity to help beautify the city’s shorelines, is part of the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup (ICC).
DATE:
Saturday, Sept. 19
WHAT:
Florida Coastal Cleanup is a part of the 30th annual ICC, the world's largest volunteer effort held to help protect our ocean, lakes and rivers. Each year, hundreds of thousands of volunteers from around the world spend a few hours removing trash and debris from beaches, lakes and rivers, keeping track of every piece of trash they find. Ocean Conservancy uses that information to produce an annual snapshot of the marine debris problem. In 2014, more than 561,000 people picked up more than 16 million pounds of trash along 13,360 miles of coastline in 91 countries. More than 6,100 pounds of that litter and debris was picked up around Duval County by 317 volunteers who donated 632 hours during the event, which spanned four hours. The volunteer value of those donated hours amounts to more than $14,500.
