Mayor Presents 2016-2017 Proposed Budget

Mayor Lenny Curry addressed a special session of the Jacksonville City Council to present his proposed 2016-2017 city budget. The $1 billion budget which does not raise taxes, increases funding to support public safety, and reflects the constraints placed on the City due to increasing pension costs.
Some highlights from the proposed budget and capital improvement program (CIP) include:

40 new police officers and 40 new community service officers

Funding for a body camera pilot program with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office

$14 million for police vehicles

$7.5 million for fire vehicles
-
$922,222 to replace a Mosquito control helicopter
-
$3 million for ash pollution remediation
-
$11.5 million to expand the Trail Ridge Landfill
-
$5.5 million for Americans with Disabilities Act compliance on curbs and ramps

Over $1 million in library maintenance and improvements
-
$12 million for road resurfacing
-
$2,250,000 for countywide Parks and Recreation projects - including $250,000 for Hemming Park

$6 million for county-wide Drainage System Rehabilitation Projects
-
$6.8 million for Lower Eastside Drainage Project
-
$2.1 million for the Trout River/ Moncrief Drainage Projects
-
$11.5 million for Trail Ridge Landfill expansion
-
$3 million for Jax Ash Site Pollution Remediation
The budget proposal now heads to the City Council Finance Committee for review, before going to the full City Council for approval in September. The budget will take effect on Oct. 1.
