2016 Healthy Weight Community Champion City of Jacksonville

Jacksonville Named 2016 Healthy Weight Community Champion

February 03, 2016
The City of Jacksonville was named a 2016 Healthy Weight Community Champion by the Florida Department of Health. The recognition is awarded to counties and cities that implement best practices to reduce obesity and encourage healthier lifestyles for residents.

Jacksonville adopted legislation that declares the need for crosswalks. As a result, ten pilot pedestrian actuated mid-block crosswalks are now being installed, and more are funded in the coming year.

“The city of Jacksonville is proud to receive the Healthy Weight Community Champion recognition for the first time,” said City Council Vice President Lori Boyer. “We are committed to making our city more pedestrian friendly and in doing so we are investing in health both now and for the future.”
Between October and December 2015, local governments were invited to submit best practices and policies they have implemented in their jurisdictions related to health and wellness. The work highlighted on the applications demonstrates local government commitment to making Florida the healthiest state in the nation.

The Community Champions program is part of the department’s Healthiest Weight Florida initiative. Healthiest Weight Florida is a public-private collaboration bringing together state agencies, not-for-profit organizations, businesses and entire communities to help Florida’s children and adults make consistent, informed choices about healthy eating and active living.
