Jacksonville Children's Commission Celebrates 21 Years
April 21, 2016
The Jacksonville Children's Commission (JCC) celebrated 21 years of providing child and family services during a celebration at City Hall on April 21.
The celebration packed the atrium of City Hall with past and present government officials, local nonprofit leaders and area kids. The commission was launched in 1994 with a budget less than $6 million under the administration of former Mayor Ed Austin, who was hailed throughout the celebration as a champion for Jacksonville children.
Since its inception, JCC has grown to serve 24,000 kids each year through partnerships with more than 50 nonprofit providers.
"We must meet the promise for quality education in Jacksonville and provide resources and conditions that ensure every child in every school receives a quality education," said Mayor Lenny Curry, who spoke during the celebration. "That’s what the Children’s Commission has done, and commits to supporting with its programs."
