City, DIA Launch Free Public Wi-Fi Network
As Downtown Jacksonville continues to grow as a premiere destination to live, work and play, free public Wi-Fi is the latest upgrade coming to town. The City and Downtown Investment Authority (DIA) have partnered to launch a free public Wi-Fi network allowing citizens, workers and visitors access to the world-wide web with their computers and mobile devices.
The free public Wi-Fi network is accessible in areas from Hogan to Market streets, and from Bay to Duval streets. Each day, the system sees an average of approximately 1,200 individual users with peeks during special events such as Art Walk.
As both the economic development entity and the Community Redevelopment Agency for Downtown Jacksonville, DIA sought to establish a free public Wi-Fi system for Downtown’s Northbank as part of its Community Development Area Plan. The Wi-Fi Project began in October 2015 when DIA allocated funds for an initial development of a free public Wi-Fi, in partnership with the City’s Information Technologies Department and Traffic Engineering Division, focused on the Elbow District and Central Civic Core, City Hall, and Hemming Park corridors.
