Close to 30 COJ Employees Receive their Lean Initiative Green Belt Certifications

December 13, 2024

Earlier today, the City of Jacksonville hosted a ceremony to recognize 28 City employees for becoming certified as Lean Initiative Green Belts.

The Lean Initiative is a program focused on improving the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of city government operations.

The City implemented the Initiative in a number of departments back in June, thanks to support from GuideWell, with the ultimate goals of eliminating waste, streamlining processes, and delivering better value for Jacksonville citizens and businesses.

“By eliminating unnecessary tasks, City employees will focus on higher-value work, leading to increased job satisfaction and retention rates, and just as importantly, better service for our constituents,” said Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan. “And perhaps best of all, identifying waste and inefficiencies will not only improve the quality of the services we provide, but it will also lead to significant cost savings for the City over time. These savings can then be reinvested in vital services such as infrastructure, health, affordable housing, homelessness and small businesses.”

Citizens and businesses will also benefit from more efficient interactions with the City, including reduced wait times for permits and approvals; licenses; and other public services – as well as faster resolutions for issues, inquiries, and requests.”

Since implementing the Lean Initiative Program, the City has reduced 112,000 hours of waste in process improvement, thanks to the 28 employees who received their Lean Initiative Green Belt Certifications today, and the Lean Initiative Program Manager, Alex Peralta-Munoz

“Our progress with this program can be tracked through the City’s Waste Warriors Dashboard, which highlights clear metrics and data analysis, ensuring that improvements are measurable and aligned with the City’s strategic goals,” said Wanyonyi Kendrick, the City’s Chief of Information Technology. The Dashboard can be found at Jacksonville.gov - Transparency Dashboards, along with our many other Transparency Dashboards.

As the City moves forward with the Lean Initiative, it will continue to refine processes, expand the program to more departments, and strive for continuous improvement to make Jacksonville a model of efficiency and innovation.
