CITY OF JACKSONVILLE UPDATE ON WINTER STORM ENZO

January 21, 2025
The National Weather Service Jacksonville has expanded the Winter Storm Warning to include all of Duval County. There will be freezing rain and a wintry mix of precipitation occurring approximately after 7pm this evening into early Wednesday morning – with icy conditions potentially lasting until 12pm. Precipitation is predicted to impact the entire county with the highest chances occurring downtown Westward. The Cold Weather and Freeze Warning Advisories show wind chill temperatures in the upper teens to low 20s.
 
City Government Offices: The Emergency Operations Center is partially activated. All City of Jacksonville offices will be closed on Wednesday, January 22 due to unsafe road conditions in the morning. Essential personnel will report for duty before conditions deteriorate, and non-essential personnel will stay home on administrative leave. City employees can call 630-CITY for updates.
 
  • City Council: Committee meetings scheduled for Wednesday, January 22 will be rescheduled for Thursday, January 23.
  • Beaches: Currently, offices for the Beaches municipalities are expected to remain open on Wednesday, January 22. They will continue to monitor weather conditions.
  • Baldwin: Their Town Hall will be closed Wednesday, January 22. The Baldwin Senior Center will be closed for the rest of the week. If you need assistance, please call 630-CITY or 904-635-5955 for a public works-related emergency.
  • 4th Circuit Court: The First Appearance Court for the 4th Circuit will remain open in Duval, Clay, and Nassau counties on Wednesday, January 22. Otherwise, offices will be closed, and only essential personnel will report for duty.
  • State Attorney: The State Attorney’s Office for Duval, Clay, and Nassau counties will be closed Wednesday, January 22, except for First Appearance. There will not be any Zoom hearings on Wednesday, January 22.
  • Property Appraiser’s Office: Their offices are closed on Wednesday, January 22.
  • Tax Collector’s Office: Their offices are closed on Wednesday, January 22.
 
Schools: All DCPS schools will be closed on Wednesday, January 22, 2025. Events scheduled for Tuesday, January 21 – including Dr. Bernier’s town hall – will go on as planned.
 
Warming Centers: The City of Jacksonville is opening additional Warming Centers on Tuesday night, given the expected weather impact on the Westside of Duval County. The following locations will be open from 9pm on Tuesday, January 21 to 12pm on Wednesday, January 22:
 
  • West Branch Library, 1425 Chaffee Road South, Jacksonville, FL 32221
  • Cecil Gym and Fitness Center, 13531 Lake Newman Street, Jacksonville, FL 32221
  • Legends Center, 5130 Soutel Drive, Jacksonville, FL 32208
 
Trash Pickup: The landfill will be closed on Wednesday, January 22. Trash pickups scheduled for Wednesday will be rescheduled for Saturday, January 25.
 
Road Safety: The safest place to be is at home. Citizens are urged to stay off the roads Tuesday evening through noon on Wednesday, January 22 for their own safety and for the safety of first responders who are also impacted by hazardous road conditions.
 
  • The Florida Department of Transportation will be pre-treating state bridges to stop ice from forming.
  • The City’s Public Works Department has crews are ready to respond to any icy conditions on any city roads or bridges.
 
630-CITY: The call center will be staffed from 10pm Tuesday, January 21 through the night, with normal hours resuming Wednesday, January 22, in the morning. If citizens encounter icy road conditions or downed powerlines, they should report those locations to 630-CITY.
 
JTA: Normal operations are continuing on Tuesday, January 21. Free transportation to warming centers as long as it is safe to do so. Buses have detours around bridges so that routes are not impacted. The Skyway will start service at 9am on Wednesday, January 22. They will monitor and make additional Wednesday service operation announcements on their social media channels.
 
JAA: Due to expected ice conditions, Jacksonville International Airport will cease airfield operations at 8pm on Tuesday, January 21. They will tentatively plan to reopen at 12pm on Wednesday, January 22, as long as it is safe to do so. Cecil, Craig, and Herlong airfields will cease operations at 5pm on Tuesday as well.
 
Fire Safety: With dangerously cold temperatures approaching, the increased use of heating equipment brings a heightened risk of home fires. Caution should be used with space heaters, fireplaces, and appliances.
