Last year, more than 10,000 pounds of paper were collected and shredded; 25 pounds of cardboard collected; 53  pairs of shoes collected; six cell phones recycled; and more than 1,800 pounds of school supplies donated.
 
The fifth annual community-wide recycling collection event is a national initiative led by Keep America Beautiful. Community members are encouraged to bring recyclables and/or donations to the following locations and times:
 
Prime Osborn Convention Center (1000 Water Street), 12 – 5 p.m.
(All materials listed below will be collected at America Recycles Day at the Prime Osborn)
 
Kmart (500 Atlantic Boulevard in Neptune Beach), 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
 
Partners Iron Mountain and Ultra Shred Technologies will have trucks at the Kmart on-site to collect and shred paper while Urban Mining will be on-hand to collect computer equipment. Additionally, volunteers will be collecting gently worn shoes, blankets, coats, towels and sporting equipment to benefit the Jacksonville Humane Society, Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Florida, Lions Club International and Duval County Public Schools’ Teacher Supply Depot.
 
At the Prime Osborn Convention Center, Republic Services Recycling Center will set-up their shred truck which allows recyclers to watch as paper is shredded.  Both sites will collect recycled materials for the Teacher Supply Depot. Materials accepted can include office, school, and arts supplies.

IMPORTANT: This drop off event is for Jacksonville/Duval County residents only. Commercial/business recyclables will not be accepted. Other than cell phones and chargers, no electronic waste will be accepted at this event. Absolutely no liquids or household hazardous will be accepted at this event. Residents may take those items to the city's Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 2675 Commonwealth Ave. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. The facility is closed on Sunday and Monday. For more information or to arrange for special handling of unusual material, call (904) 387-8847.
 
 
BACKGROUND: Keep America Beautiful’s “America Recycles Day” is celebrated each year in November. More than a celebration, “America Recycles Day” is the only nationally-recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling programs in the United States.
