Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month!
September 30, 2016
Each year, our nation observes National Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. The observation is a time dedicated to celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino American citizens to our country. The observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson, and was expanded to a monthlong celebration by President Ronald Reagan in 1988.
Locally, the Mayor’s Hispanic-American Advisory Board promotes city services among the growing Hispanic community in Jacksonville. Established in 1998, the 11 member board advises the mayor and his staff on specific needs within the Hispanic community and provides a means by which the City may obtain information and guidance relating to its citizens of Hispanic descent. In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Jacksonville Public Library will host several events and courses designed to honor the Hispanic experience.
