Celebrate Police Appreciation Week (May 12-18, 2019)

May 15, 2019
Law enforcement agencies across the country, including members of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO), play an essential role in promoting and safeguarding the rights and freedoms of American citizens, and there is a holiday to celebrate their service.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week surrounding as National Police Week. In tribute to the 62 fallen officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our city and the thousands of officers who currently protect and serve the citizens of Jacksonville, please join us in celebrating Police Appreciation Week, May 12-18, 2019 (view the proclamation here).

Here are a few things you can do to show your appreciation for these brave men and women:
  • Personally deliver a thank you card to your nearest police station. Invite friends, neighbors and coworkers to sign your card or deliver their own.
  • Make a donation to the Police Athletic League of Jacksonville or Fraternal Order of Police.
  • If you see a police officer while you're out for lunch or picking up coffee, pay for their order.
  • Cultivate a better understanding of what Police Officers do by signing up for Citizens Police Academy, the Corrections Officer Observer Program or Crime Prevention Classes at jaxsheriff.org/Sheriff-s-Office/citizen-involvement.
  • Visit Jacksonville’s Fallen Officers Memorial Wall and observe a moment of silence to recognize the sacrifices of our local law enforcement professionals and their families, while remembering our heroes whose lives were lost while protecting our city.
