ACPS Celebrates National Dog Week

September 24, 2018
National Dog Week is a celebration of dogs, what they mean to people and the ongoing effort to improve life for all dogs.
The observance focuses on educating dog owners and the public about responsible ownership and interaction, as well as raising awareness for abused and unwanted dogs throughout the country. National Dog Week began in 1928 when World War I veteran and canine advocate Captain William Judy decided a weeklong celebration was needed to recognize the service and the unwavering loyalty of man's best friend. After returning from the war, Judy established a publishing operation dedicated to canines, in addition to purchasing and publishing Dog World magazine.

National Dog Week takes place annually over the fourth week of September. The observance is a great opportunity for dog lovers to get out and make a difference in the lives of dogs in their community, while having fun and learning how to keep their own canine companions happy and healthy

Jacksonville dog lovers can celebrate by supporting Animal Care and Protective Services (ACPS). Citizens are encouraged to learn more about adopting and fostering pets from the shelter, and other ways to help such as donating time or goods. The ACPS shelter (2020 Forest St. - 32204) is open Saturday and Sunday (10 a.m. - 6 p.m.) and Tuesday - Friday (noon - 7 p.m.). To learn more about ACPS, its services and how to help, persons should visit coj.net/pets.
