Named after the renowned French explorer, the Jean Ribault (shown above) launched from Atlantic DryDock and Marine in Jacksonville in 1996. The 40-car capacity Jean Ribault is the primary vessel used in the St. Johns River Ferry service. The vessel features two independent computerized propulsion systems, as well as modern navigation systems including radar, DGPS and communication equipment.
The 50-car capacity Blackbeard (shown left) was retired in 2008 and is in dry dock storage in Green Cove Springs, Fla.
