Gov. Scott: Jacksonville Area Added Nearly 29,000 Jobs Over the Year

Governor Rick Scott announced today that Jacksonville area businesses created 28,700 new private-sector jobs over the year in September. The area’s unemployment rate was 4.6 percent in September, a decline of 0.4 percentage point in the last year. Florida businesses created 17,900 private-sector jobs across the state during September 2016, bringing the total number of jobs created since December 2010 to 1,222,500 jobs.

Mayor Spends the Day with Residents in Greatly Impacted Areas

Residents in areas greatly impacted by Hurricane Matthew received a visit from Mayor Lenny Curry today. Joined by JFRD, JSO and FEMA representatives, the mayor provided water and food to residents in homes that suffered severe damage from the storm. 

City of Jacksonville Offices to Reopen Monday

City of Jacksonville offices will open for normal city business on Monday, Oct. 10. Employees requiring additional leave time should notify their supervisor. In the past 48 hours, the River City has taken on a new meaning as Hurricane Matthew presented life-threatening storm surge, which reached levels not seen in the area in nearly 120 years. As the nation’s largest city, covering 840 square miles, Jacksonville serves a population of 850,000 residents. Nearly half of them were evacuated Wednesday afternoon from the beaches and low-lying areas due to dangerous hurricane conditions. Federal, state and local officials are conducting 24-hour emergency operations to address the needs and impact of this historic storm.
