Overview

The Schools Reinventing Jacksonville Challenge is a citywide incentive in partnership with COJ, DCPS, Minecraft Education & C40 cities. The challenge empowers students from elementary, middle, high school, and college to help re-envision Jacksonville’s communities and public spaces. By integrating STEM, urban planning, and sustainability, this program cultivates creativity, collaboration, and civic engagement among young learners.

The Virtual Semi-Finals will allow top teams to showcase their projects online before advancing to the final in-person event. A panel of expert judges will evaluate submissions and determine the finalists based on creativity, sustainability, and urban planning principles.

Challenge Theme: Sustainable & Resilient Riverfront Development

Teams will design a sustainable riverfront space that serves as a community hub, incorporating:

โœ… Eco-friendly materials & energy efficiency
โœ… Water management & biodiversity preservation
โœ… Green spaces, community parks, & wellness areas
โœ… Sustainable transportation (bike stations, EV chargers, etc.)
โœ… Renewable energy sources (solar panels, green roofs, etc.)
โœ… Educational signage to raise awareness of sustainability

The Mayor’s Cup – Live Final Event!

The Top 8 Teams (2 from each grade level) will compete in the ultimate Esports-style final challenge on May 20th from 9 AM - 2 PM.

  • ๐ŸŽ Exclusive Minecraft swag
  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ Prizes for their school or organization
  • ๐ŸŽ–๏ธ Recognition from city officials and the mayor

Who can participate?

All K-12th grade students in Duval County (public, private, charter, nonprofit organizations, afterschool clubs) , collegiate students enrolled at a College within Duval County.

How many students can be on a team?

Up to 5 students, with 2 alternates allowed.
Date Event Details
April 7th ๐ŸŒŽ Press Conference & Program Release The official Minecraft Education "New Jax City" World & challenge prompt will be released.
April 28th ๐ŸŽฅ Submission Deadline Teams submit their 2-minute video explaining their Minecraft build via Microsoft Forms.
May 6th ๐Ÿ† Top 8 Finalists Announced The Top 2 Teams from Elementary, Middle, High School & College will be announced.
May 20th ๐ŸŽฎ Mayor’s Cup Final Event The top 8 teams will compete live in a final in-person Esports-style challenge in front of city leaders and the mayor.

How will I know if my team makes it to the Mayor’s Cup?

The Top 6 teams will be announced on May 1st.

Where will the final event take place?

The Mayor’s Cup will be an in-person Esports-style event on May 15th. More details will be provided to finalists.
