The City of Jacksonville was selected as one of the 2019 TD Green Sapce Grant winners for thier innovative project along the S-Line, we will be working with Groundwork Jacksonville to complete the outlined project:


This proposed project, the S-Line Trail Biodiversity Corridor, a smaller section of a much larger proposed thirty mile urban greenway (Emerald Trail) composed of trails, parks, green infrastructure, art and restored creeks being spearheaded by Groundwork Jacksonville, a 501-(c)-3. Once completed, the Emerald Trail will encompass nine segments and include phases of work to restore creeks and construct trails within Jacksonville’s Urban Core. This project engages local underserved communities with the opportunity to be part of the rejuvenation of Jacksonville’s green infrastructure.
               This application is specifically for the S-Line Trail Biodiversity Corridor, a rails-to-trails project by the City that converted old railways to a multiuse trail running through numerous urban neighborhoods. The S-Line Trail Biodiversity Corridor, between 2201-2209 Boulevard St., was selected as an excellent location to plant a raingarden, pollinator garden, spice garden, fruiting trees, and expand the current 40ft bioswale as well as construct educational material/signage describing the purpose project and each garden installation. This location was chosen for its proximity to two large low-income apartment complexes and a church in addition for the heavy foot/bike traffic by children to and from school.
               The S-Line Biodiversity Corridor will be designed and overseen by a certified landscape architect to ensure integrity and optimal performance of the project. The design includes:

• The raingarden and bioswale extensions will be strategically constructed and planted to hold and filter runoff from the trail into the backyards of the apartments and church adjacent to the trail. Education placards will be installed to explain the use and importance of green infrastructure and how it reduces rain water runoff, improve water quality and reduce flooding when engineered properly.
• The pollinator garden will include key nectar producing plant species to provide food and habitats for pollinator inspect/bird species. This not only provides wildlife habitat and plant diversity; but along with the education material, will describe the importance of pollinators as part of our ecosystem while providing a relaxing, atheistically pleasing section along the S-Line Biodiversity Corridor.
• The spice garden will include herbs and spices for human consumption to provide a source of healthy, fresh herbs for the local community to use. This will not only help provide buy in from those individuals using the herbs/spices while maintaining the spice garden, but provide information about the importance of where stable food supplies and having a balanced, healthy diet.
• The City will assist with the purchase and installation of six (6) fruit trees throughout the S-Line Trail Biodiversity Corridor. This will offer additional tree canopy and offer the local community, which has limited access to fresh food, the opportunity to pick fresh fruit from the trees.

               The City will work with Groundwork Jacksonville, the general contractor on this project, due to their experience planning and executing quality community art and greenspace projects. The City choose to partner with Groundwork Jacksonville for their dedication and innovation in installing green infrastructure and art in Jacksonville’s Urban Core while engaging youth from these neighborhoods in environmental stewardship. Groundwork Jacksonville will provide the planning and site management, design plans, a portion of the project cost, and volunteer recruitment and management to complete aspects of the S-Line Trail Biodiversity Corridor. The City will assist Groundwork Jacksonville by providing the trees specified in the design, mulch and helping with public outreach. Groundwork Jacksonville will reveal the design plan at the City’s Tree Commission meeting on April 11, 2019.
The model segment for the Emerald Trail will be an excellent example of how the City of Jacksonville is working with various organizations to beautify a historically underserved community. This collaboration will bring together multiple stakeholders to provide an educational experience while continuing to build the Emerald Trail.
