Mayport Welcomes New Ships
August 17, 2014
Local leaders joined the United States Navy at Naval Station Mayport to welcome the USS Iwo Jima and the USS Fort McHenry to their new homeport in Jacksonville. Council Member Crescimbeni was aboard the USS Iwo Jima when the ship arrived in Mayport.
The USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7) is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship commissioned in 2001 and the USS Fort McHenry (LSD-43) is a Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship commissioned in 1987. Together they will add an additional 1,300 sailors and marines to Naval Station Mayport and the local economy.
