John Meserve is the Executive Director and CEO of Fleet Landing, a Continuing Care Retirement Community Located in Atlantic Beach, Florida. The community includes 320 Independent Living residences, Leeward Manor (a 60 room Assisted Living Residence), and the Health Center, which includes Skilled Nursing Care and a special care Alzheimer Unit. In that capacity he has been certified as a 'Retirement Housing Professional', RHP.
John was born in New Jersey, grew up in Michigan, and attended college in New York at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. He was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy upon graduation in 1963 and spent 27 years on active duty.
He first served as helicopter pilot on the aircraft carrier the USS Wasp, and following that tour went to Vietnam as a combat pilot flying helicopter gunships. During that year, he was shot down during a rescue mission, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). He served on several ships, including a 3-year tour as Executive Officer of the USS Iwo Jima, and was on board during the bombing of the Marine Barracks in Beruit, Lebanon. The ship acted as the floating hospital for the wounded. Captain Meserve finished his active duty as Commanding Officer of the Naval Air Station Mayport and retired from active duty in 1990. Following his retirement from the Navy, John was recruited to be the Executive Director of the Beaches Chamber and Visitor's Center of the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce. He served in that capacity for three years prior to accepting his current position at Fleet Landing.
John resides in Atlantic Beach with his wife, Mary. They have two married children, three grandchildren and his youngest daughter recently graduated from Florida State University. His interests include computers, woodworking and jogging.
