Warren Alvarez was born and raised on the family farm on the city's Northside and still lives there today. Alvarez was elected to serve his district in July 1999 and re-elected in 2003. He was the recipient of the 2003-2004 Charles D. Webb Award, the City Council's most prestigious internal honor.

Community service is important to Alvarez. His civic involvement includes:

  • Acting supervisor for the Duval County Soil and Water Conservation District for 22 years
  • Chairman of the Jacksonville - Duval County Agricultural Council
  • Past member of the Jacksonville Economic Development Council
  • Founding member and chairman of the E.D.E.N. Group
  • Past president of the North Council of the Chamber of Commerce
  • Finance Chairman for the Boy Scouts of America
  • Chairman of the Wharf's Fishing Charities
  • Chairman of the Mayor's Agricultural Advisory Board
  • Chairman of the North Citizens' Planning Advisory Committee (CPAC)

Alvarez is also active in the Duval County 4-H Club Foundation, Jacksonville Northside Lions Club, Farm Service Agency, Jacksonville Blue Ribbon Crime Commission, Jacksonville Comprehensive Growth Management Committee and the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce Board of Governors. He is a member of Garden City United Methodist Church, where he is the past chairman of the administrative board, past lay leader and past youth director and coordinator. Alvarez has been involved in the farming industry his entire life. He is the secretary/treasurer of Alvarez Jersey Farm, Inc., managing partner of Alvarez Dairy, Inc. and past president of Holly Hill Dairy. He is also active in a number of other business ventures such as secretary/treasurer and general manager, Alvarez Rent-a-Car; limited partner, Weeks Skyland Joint Venture, Ltd. (developer of the Jacksonville International Tradeport); managing partner, Alvarez Investment; managing partner, Skyland Properties; and vice president, Alvarez Properties. He also served in the Florida Air National Guard and retired after 31 years. His professional associations include serving as president and board member of the Duval County Farm Bureau for 44 years; president and charter member of the Duval County Cattlemen's Association for 36 years and past director of the Upper Florida Milk Producer's Association. He has also served on the Florida Farm Bureau's Tax Advisory Committee and Resolutions Committee.

Alvarez is a graduate of Andrew Jackson High School, completed courses at the University of Florida in Dairy Management, Dairy Production and Bookkeeping and Farm Records and attended Lay Speakers School for United Methodist Church. He and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Tison Alvarez, have been married for 51 years. They have two daughters, Karen Hurst and Elizabeth Nesler, and two grandchildren, Chad and Jared Hurst.
